Nearly 5,000 children in the UK are taken to hospital every year after choking.
Over half of them are under five years old and most of these accidents occur at home.
Babies and children are naturally inquisitive and get to know the world by using their senses – while you might pick up an object to get a closer look, a baby or young child will probably want to chew it to find out more!
Children can easily swallow, inhale, or choke on small items such as marbles, buttons, peanuts and small toys.

Food is the most likely cause of choking in babies and young children, including food you think is quite soft and small, like a whole grape, a cube of jelly, marshmallows, or a piece of hot dog.
