We usually define adult casualties as anyone over 18 and paediatric casualties as anyone 18 or under.

However, there are some first aid situations where the techniques we use are different depending on whether the casualty is an infant, child, adolescent or adult.

This is mainly because of:

• Differences in the physical development of the individual
• The cause of the illness or injury
